The IT team is a company’s strong line of defense. It protects a good portion of the company’s assets in terms of information and data, and ensures that all pertinent information that the company keeps is secure from prying eyes and sticky fingers. Who is the IT Team?

The IT team is usually composed of different individuals who can fulfill the different roles required in order to perform the job of the department. These roles include:

1. The Programmer

The programmer is responsible for creating, modifying and improving computer programs using code. He or she is also responsible for correcting errors, writing and keeping documentation of software and program development and conducting trial runs of the applications.


Preferably a CIS degree or a bachelor’s degree in computer science, with a minimum qualification of an associate’s degree. Other degrees, such as liberal arts, may also be considered provided the individual specialized in computer science.

2. The System Administrator

The system administrator sets up and maintains the system. He or she installs, maintains and supports servers and other systems, and is often the one called upon to fix issues, problems, glitches and outages in the servers. He or she is also responsible for implementing recovery and backup policies, monitoring network communication and setting up user accounts.


Although many system administrators are self-taught, others have completed a bachelor’s degree in either MIS (Management Information Systems) or Computer Science. Some individuals may earn certifications that are specific to the type of servers they use and work with. Others may also complete a graduate degree in their expertise.

3. Computer Technician

The computer technician is responsible for a number of things that help keep the business going. He or she sets up security measures, configures computer networks, repairs or maintains hardware and computer equipment, performs troubleshooting and installs software and hardware systems. He or she is also the person to go to if technical support is required.


A bachelor’s or associate’s degree in computer information services, although a related degree will help as well. Many computer technicians are also electrical engineers or network administrators. Many technicians also seek certifications in their field to meet industry standards and improve their chances of promotion. Due to the changing nature of the business and work environment, computer technicians are expected to undergo continuing education to keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date and relevant.

4. IT Manager

The IT Manager is in charge of the IT department. He or she is essentially the captain of that ship. He or she is responsible for streamlining the operation of the department by ensuring that the roles of the IT team are integrated well and that each member understands his or her job. He or she also ensures that the team understands the objectives of the business and that the organization’s goals are met. It is the role of the IT manager to design activities and programs that will help promote efficiency in the workplace while ensuring the security of the data and business system.


An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in MIS, computer science or other major related to computers. Graduates of computer programming, computer engineering, database management, networking and even mathematics can also be considered for the role provided they have a good work experience in the field. Someone who has had training in IT management is also considered desirable. Certification is usually not required but can help boost one’s hiring prospects.
